BOOK REVIEW: "The Client" by John Grisham
Review by Rim
I participated in the Tome Topple Readathon for the first time this year and I've chosen "The Client" by John Grisham since my edition was 566 pages. I enjoyed myself reading this book and participating in the sprint held by the hosts, though I joined late I managed to finish one tome, it was FUN!!
SUMMARY OF THE PLOT:
The story is about the Sway boys (Mark and Ricky) who stumbled upon Jerome Clifford in the wood when he was trying to killl himself. Ricky the youngest (8 years old) insisted they run away and leave the man suicide in peace BUT Mark (11 years old) insisted on watching him. Jerome tried to kill himself by using a garden hose which he attached to the rear of his car and decided to die using the fumes, but Mark didn't leave him in "peace" and he ased his way toward the trees and freed the garden hose two times on the third adventure Clifford got hold of him and through him in the car and told him that he wants him to come see the wizard at la la land -the man was crazy due to the pills and whiskey he was consuming- meanwhile Clifford spilled his gutts about what's troubling him and that he was a lawyer and his respectful clien Barry Muldanno "The Blade" who is the prime suspect in the case of the late senet Boyed Boyette's disapearance (allegedly murdered by Muldanno). The latter had confessd the crime to his lawyer but that wasn't what's troubling Clifford, it was the dead body that The Blade had hid in his garage which made him go crazy and the fact that he knew about it yet he couldn't tell anyone in fear of the Blade that drove him to kill himself. After that Mark slips through Jerome's fingers and the latter shoot himself in the mouth. Now Mark knows where Barry had hid the body and the FBI are convinced that Jrome must have told him something before he died so they want him to talk BUT Mark is afraid of The Mafia and Barry the Blade. Too much happened in this story to be summarized in a few lines. So I highly recommend it if you lick thrillers/ crime fiction.
I gave the plot a solid 5 stars
CHARACTERS:
I was really impressed by Mark's characters and I thought that he's much mature for an 11 years old kid. He's funny, sarcastic at a time and serious like an adult at most occasions. I liked his lawyer Reggie too. My problem was with his mum's character who to me was completely absent and didn't act like a mum whose child is in dangr of the Mafia but ovarall I gave th characters a 4.5 stars.
WRITING STYLE:
The only thing I am going to say about the writing style is that it's too detailed to the point you get lost and you find yourself forgetting about what's happening at that moment.
EVENT:
It's for sure that "the Client" is an event driven story. The characters hadn't got the chance to catch a breath and hell poured on their heads.
ENDING:
I felt the ending was aprobt and things moved faster then I expected them to be. but I thing that after 42 chapters it was wise to end it sooner not later. Also the ending came as no surprise because that what should have happened seven chapters before.
